Masdar City has been named the world’s most sustainable city by Cityscape Intelligence. Abdulla Ahmed Balalaa, Acting Executive Director for Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar, was also recognized by the business intelligence firm as one of the one of the most influential figures for sustainable real estate in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Y4S Leader travels to Antarctica on climate mission
Athra Khamis, a Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) Future Sustainability Leader, has swapped the desert environment of the UAE for a very different kind of desert: Antarctica. The 24-year old Emirati participated in March in the 2041 ClimateForce: Antarctica Expedition, organized by the 2041 Foundation, as part of a group of global youth leaders to witness firsthand the effects of climate change on the continent and raise awareness of the issue.

Masdar and France Sign Joint Declaration to Cooperate on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
Today at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Masdar signed a joint declaration with France in the presence of French President Francois Hollande. Financial Times names Masdar City best free zone for renewable energy
Masdar City has been named “Best Free Zone for Start Up Support” by the Financial Times and has collected three other prestigious global awards. The Global Free Zone of the Year Awards hosted by the FT’s fDi Magazine are among the most high-profile awards in the free zone sector, with approximately 65 free zones entering this year’s competition. This is Masdar City’s second consecutive year receiving awards.

UAE-PPF training programme boosts renewable energy development capacity
The third session of the Pacific Renewable Energy Integration training programme, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, successfully concluded today in Auckland, New Zealand. The programme focuses on development and financing of solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects and is managed by Masdar, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). The programme is funded through the US$50 million UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund (UAE-PPF) which has executed renewable energy projects in 11 Pacific Island countries.

Masdar Celebrates World Book Day
Students from Al Ezza School in Abu Dhabi saw their favourite tales come to life at a Storytelling Session held near the iconic Wind Tower in Masdar City. Masdar celebrated World Book Day by inviting local school children to a book reading event today. Zayed Future Energy Prize expands global reach in record year for entries
The Zayed Future Energy Prize has closed submissions for its 10th cycle with a record of 2,296 entries – a 37 percent increase compared to 2016. Nominations for the Large Corporation and Lifetime Achievement categories yielded 1,113 entries, while the remaining 1,183 submissions were for Small & Medium Enterprise, Non-Profit Organisation, and Global High Schools categories.

Masdar and ONEE Partner to Deliver Electricity to 940 Remote Villages in the Kingdom of Morocco
Masdar and Morocco’s Office National de l'Electricité et de l'Eau Potable (ONEE) have signed a partnership to design, supply and install 17,670 Solar Home Systems across 940 villages in the Kingdom of Morocco. When complete, the solar homes, along with broader electrification initiatives, will result in 99 percent of rural Morocco having access to energy by the end of 2017 – a critical resource that underpins economic development.

Oman’s Dhofar Wind Farm produces first kilowatt hour of electricity
The landmark wind farm, which is fully funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the leading national entity for international development aid, was successfully connected to Oman’s electricity transmission grid last week during the commissioning of the project’s first wind turbine, which is now supplying clean power. The remaining 12 wind turbines will be commissioned, tested and connected to the grid in sequence, ensuring the start of commercial operations before the end of 2019.
