Masdar City has been named the world’s most sustainable city by Cityscape Intelligence. Abdulla Ahmed Balalaa, Acting Executive Director for Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar, was also recognized by the business intelligence firm as one of the one of the most influential figures for sustainable real estate in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Cityscape Intelligence highlighted that Masdar City “now offers a complete innovation ecosystem housing pioneering R&D and pilot facilities that nurture and implement ground-breaking solar energy, energy storage, green building, and urban sustainability projects.”

“Designed to capture prevailing winds and offer naturally cooler outdoor public spaces, especially in the UAE’s sweltering summers, Masdar City has enabled its buildings to consumer 40 perent less energy and water and is also powered by clean energy generated from a 10 MW solar power plant on-site and 1MW solar rooftop system,” the firm said.

Balalaa featured in Cityscape Intelligence’s list of the 20 most influential sustainable MENA real estate professionals, where he was described as having “managed the commercialisation and development of partnerships for large scale projects, including a range of sustainable urban developments, asset monetisation, as well as bespoke sustainable development solutions.”

Other professionals on the list include HE Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), who is also on the Board of Directors at Masdar. Gerard Evenden, Senior Executive Partner and Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, the architecture firm behind Masdar City, also featured on the list, which was not presented in any order.
