Masdar, a global clean energy leader and a pioneer in green hydrogen, and Tadweer Group, a driving force in unlocking the value of waste, today announced the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA). This agreement aims to progress the development of the first commercial-scale Waste-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Abu Dhabi.

Located in Abu Dhabi, the plant will covert around 500,000 tons of waste into SAF per year, using a hybrid production pathway that combines renewable energy-powered electrolysis producing green hydrogen and waste gasification turning syngas into SAF through various proven chemical processes.

Once operational, the project is expected to serve multiple markets, positioning Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for SAF and supporting the decarbonization of a sector that accounted for over 18 percent of the UAE’s GDP in 2023, according to IATA data. SAF has the potential to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80 percent compared with conventional jet fuel, according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates.

The project also represents a key step toward delivering on several strategic national priorities, including the UAE General Policy for SAF, Abu Dhabi’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Policy, the National Hydrogen Strategy, the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

By transforming waste into clean energy, the project will also contribute to Tadweer Group’s strategic ambition of diverting 80 percent of waste from Abu Dhabi landfills by 2030, and creating new value chains in waste management, green hydrogen, and renewable fuels.

Building on Masdar’s extensive experience in renewable energy and hydrogen, and Tadweer Group’s expertise in unlocking the value of waste through multiple local and international partnerships, the project will reinforce the UAE’s position as a pioneer in clean energy innovation. The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a global leader in the production of low-carbon fuels, creating synergies across renewable energy, waste valorization, and sustainable transport.

In the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) and Emerge — a joint venture between Masdar and EDF power solutions — signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the second edition of Ras Al Khaimah Investment Summit (RAKIS), held in the emirate. The collaboration aims to advance renewable energy solutions within the RAKEZ ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of clean technologies and sustainable practices across the Ras Al Khaimah’s industrial and business sectors.

The agreement was signed by Yaser Abdullah Al Ahmed, Chief Government & Corporate Relations Officer at RAKEZ, and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge. It was witnessed by Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF power solutions Middle East, and Ali Alshimmari, Emerge Board Member.

Through this partnership, RAKEZ and Emerge aim to identify and implement sustainable energy projects across the economic zone, including solar generation, energy storage, and hybrid solutions, in line with the UAE’s clean energy agenda and Ras Al Khaimah’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040.

Companies will look to leverage combined strengths to accelerate technologically advanced, sustainable solutions

AD Ports Group (ADX: ADPORTS), a global enabler of integrated trade, transport, industry, and logistics solutions, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, have signed a Partnership Agreement to collaborate on the development and delivery of offshore wind projects.

Under the agreement, the companies will identify opportunities where AD Ports Group can serve as a key partner and contractor for Masdar global offshore wind initiatives. The parties will jointly determine technical requirements for Masdar projects and identify where AD Ports Group can deploy its extensive technical and logistical capabilities, including the provision and fabrication of substations, onshore and offshore logistics solutions, subsea services, and maintenance and operations support, to meet project needs effectively and with cost efficiencies.

Terra-Gen, one of the largest independent, integrated renewable energy producers in the United States, jointly owned by Masdar and Igneo Infrastructure Partners, announced today the commissioning of the Monte Cristo I Windpower Project.

The 238.5-megawatt facility, located in Hidalgo County, Texas, will generate more than 850 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to powering approximately 81,000 homes a year. The facility’s capacity has been contracted to two corporate buyers through long-term power purchase agreements.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site marked the milestone, bringing together companies’ representatives, local officials, and members of the community.

“It is an honor to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of men and women who made the commissioning of the Monte Cristo wind project possible,” said John O’Connor, Chief Financial Officer for Terra-Gen. “This project underscores Terra-Gen’s commitment to expanding access to renewable energy across Texas and the U.S., strengthening regional grid reliability with clean, sustainable power, and investing in our local communities.”

Construction of the Monte Cristo I Windpower project created approximately 280 jobs at the peak of activities, with more than 490,000 hours worked without a lost-time incident during construction and transition to operations.

In addition, the project also enhanced the community through infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to more than 11 miles of Texas Department of Transportation roads and 25 miles of county roads.

Beyond the construction phase, the facility will continue to deliver significant long-term economic benefits to the region, including more than $100 million in property taxes, landowner payments and other local contributions during the project’s life.

Monte Cristo I Windpower is Terra-Gen’s second wind project in Texas. Together with the Texas Big Spring wind facility, the company’s clean energy generation in the state now totals 273 MW. Phase 2 of Monte Cristo Windpower has also been permitted and development activities for the project are ongoing.

Monte Cristo I Windpower is the first project to be completed since Masdar acquired a 50 percent stake in Terra-Gen in 2024. This acquisition underscores Masdar’s long-term commitment to investing in and supporting the U.S. energy transformation, and the strategic importance of the market in the company’s broader global portfolio.

Masdar’s latest Power to Change documentary takes us to Uzbekistan, where Masdar is driving one of Central Asia’s most ambitious renewable energy programs. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, has signed a Battery Storage Service Agreement with JSC Uzenergosotish, Uzbekistan’s state-owned joint-stock company, to develop the nation’s largest standalone battery energy storage (BESS) project.

The Zarafshan BESS forms the first phase of a national battery storage program following Masdar’s December 2023 agreement with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade to develop up to 575 megawatts (MW) / 1.15 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of BESS capacity across the country.

Phase 1, which will be capable of storing up to 300MW / 600MWh of electricity, equivalent to powering approximately 1.3 million households for two hours, will connect to the Murunau Substation, while a second 300MW / 600MWh phase will extend the Zarafshan facility.

Once operational in Q3 2028, the Zarafshan BESS will strengthen Uzbekistan’s grid reliability and flexibility, supporting its target of generating 54 percent of power from renewables by 2030 and advancing long-term net-zero goals.

The Zarafshan BESS adds to Masdar’s growing current footprint in Uzbekistan, which includes around 2GW of clean energy capacity, with investments totaling over $2 billion USD. OMV, Austria’s integrated energy, fuels and chemicals company, and Masdar, a global clean energy leader, have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture (JV) for the financing, construction and operation of the 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria.

This landmark project will be one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen production facilities and marks a major step in OMV’s commitment to decarbonizing its Schwechat refinery and accelerating the energy transformation. Construction of the facility began in September 2025 and it is expected to be operational in 2027.

The JV between OMV and Masdar will be majority-owned by OMV with Masdar owning 49 percent. The partnership combines OMV’s strategic leadership under its integrated Fuels and Chemicals business and Masdar’s commercial, financial and technical expertise in developing and operating clean energy projects worldwide. OMV, which is already running a 10 MW electrolyzer plant for green hydrogen in Schwechat, will procure the renewable electricity for production and own the green hydrogen produced.

The partnership lays the foundation for a future strategic collaboration between OMV and Masdar to explore green hydrogen, synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF) and synthetic chemicals production in both the UAE and Central and Northern Europe, following the signing of the Letter of Intent in April earlier this year. The JV is anticipated to close in early 2026, conditional on completion of final documentation, shareholders’ approvals and regulatory approvals.

ADNOC, Masdar, XRG, and Microsoft today announced a strategic agreement to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) deployment across ADNOC’s value chain, and to deliver energy solutions for Microsoft’s global AI and data center growth. The collaboration was announced at the ENACT Majlis in Abu Dhabi, ahead of ADIPEC.

Building on ADNOC and Microsoft’s long-established partnership, the expanded agreement brings Masdar and XRG into the fold to develop sustainable energy projects and infrastructure in support of Microsoft’s global AI and data center expansion.

As part of the agreement, ADNOC and Microsoft will co-develop and deploy AI agents to drive autonomous operations and unlock greater efficiency, building on ADNOC’s successful deployment of AI solutions across its value chain. Microsoft will also provide advanced AI tools and upskilling programs, while both companies will explore a joint innovation ecosystem to create transformative solutions for the energy sector.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, announced today it has been awarded two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, with a combined capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW), under the sixth round of bidding in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).

The Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects, for the 1,400-megawatt (MW) Najran plant and the 600MW Ad Darb facility, will be developed on a build, own, and operate (BOO) basis, with a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The Ad Darb plant, which will be located in Jizan Province, is expected to begin commercial operations in late 2027, with the Najran project, based in Najran Province, starting commercial operations in the first half of 2028.

Principal Buyer is the entity responsible for conducting predevelopment studies, tendering power generation projects, and signing Power Purchase Agreements with project developers. To date, the company has awarded a total capacity of 43.2 GW, with 12.3 GW being already connected to the grid.

Masdar has secured the largest capacity in the highly competitive SPPC bidding for three consecutive years, with other solar projects in development including the 1,100MW Al Henakiyah project, scheduled to begin commercial operations next year, and the 2,000MW Al Sadawi project, expected to start operation in 2027.

Established in 2006, Masdar is a clean energy investor, developer and operator, with a global portfolio capacity of over 51GW and a mandate to increase its portfolio to 100GW by 2030. Masdar opened an office in Saudi Arabia in 2022 to support the nation’s clean energy objectives. Masdar’s operational portfolio in the Kingdom includes the 300 MW Jeddah Solar Power Plant and the 400 MW Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm, Saudi Arabia’s first wind project and the largest in the Middle East.
