UAE announces new agreements under US$50m Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund

Zayed Future Energy Prize Opens Submissions for 2013 Edition
The Prize will invite entries from companies, individuals, organizations and high schools prior to the deadline to submit – July 16, 2012, for a chance to win part of the US$4 million prize fund. Masdar Green REIT signs green financing commitment with First Abu Dhabi Bank for growth of its portfolio
Masdar City, Masdar’s pioneering sustainable urban development in Abu Dhabi, through its Masdar Green Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), has signed a financing commitment in the amount of USD$200,000,000, with First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) relating to financing of the REIT portfolio to facilitate further acquisitions and portfolio growth. FAB will act as sole mandated lead arranger and bookrunner, green loan coordinator, agent, security agent and account bank for this transaction.

Partnerships can help sovereign funds operate as climate-aligned investors
Sovereign wealth funds can leverage partnerships to help them bridge “capability gaps” and operate more effectively as climate-aligned investors, according to a new report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Development Centre. The report cites Mubadala Investment Company’s Masdar as an example of a company that has made partnerships a “core component” of its investment strategy.

Solar and wind account for 67% of New Power Capacity Added Worldwide in 2019: BNEF
Solar and wind power accounted for over two-thirds of the 265GW of new capacity installed worldwide in 2019, up from less than a quarter of new build in 2010, according to data from BloombergNEF. Photovoltaics (PV) topped all other technologies in new-build terms, with a record 118 gigawatts constructed, and was the most popular technology deployed in a third of nations, the research company said.

UAE and partners to build resilient green power system for hurricane-ravaged Barbuda
The UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) has announced a partnership with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda’s Ministry of Public Utilities, Civil Aviation, Transport and Energy, the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZMFAT) to restore power to Barbuda following the near-total destruction of the island after Hurricane Irma struck in September 2017.
