Global “H20 Minus C02” Desalination Alliance Convenes First Meeting at ADSW 2016
The Global Clean Water Desalination Alliance (GCWDA) held its first meeting on 19 January during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The Masdar-led “H20 minus C02” Alliance was founded on 5 December on the sidelines of the Paris climate change negotiations (COP 21). The Alliance aims to bring together key water desalinationand clean energy stakeholders with the goal to reduce the CO2 emissions of the world’s water desalination. Organisations from 23 countries are members of the Alliance, including the United States, China, Korea, Japan and several European countries.

Masdar’s 4th annual ‘Engage’ Blogging Contest
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s Renewable Energy Company, has launched the fourth annual international ‘Engage’ Blogging Contest ahead of January’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2016 – the Middle East’s largest gathering on sustainability. Under the theme “The Transition to a Sustainable Economy by 2030,” the competition asks contestants to discuss their views on how governments and the private sector can collaborate to solve the risks posed by climate change.

Today, the Urban Journalism Academy, a pioneering initiative to train journalists and media professionals with an interest in sustainable, urban development, held a workshop for media on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2016. Organized by United Nations Habitat III Secretariat and hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Government of United Arab Emirates and Masdar, the workshop convened over 30 representatives of local, regional and international media.

Masdar and ONEE Partner to Deliver Electricity to 940 Remote Villages in the Kingdom of Morocco
Masdar and Morocco’s Office National de l'Electricité et de l'Eau Potable (ONEE) have signed a partnership to design, supply and install 17,670 Solar Home Systems across 940 villages in the Kingdom of Morocco. When complete, the solar homes, along with broader electrification initiatives, will result in 99 percent of rural Morocco having access to energy by the end of 2017 – a critical resource that underpins economic development.

Oman’s Dhofar Wind Farm produces first kilowatt hour of electricity
The landmark wind farm, which is fully funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the leading national entity for international development aid, was successfully connected to Oman’s electricity transmission grid last week during the commissioning of the project’s first wind turbine, which is now supplying clean power. The remaining 12 wind turbines will be commissioned, tested and connected to the grid in sequence, ensuring the start of commercial operations before the end of 2019.

When we think of renewable energy infrastructure, we often have in mind dark blue photovoltaic rectangles carpeting the landscape, or large three-blade horizontal axis wind turbines marching along mountain ridges or into the sea. Masdar Hits Halfway Milestone in Project Bringing Electricity to Rural Morocco
Abu Dhabi, UAE, 9 April 2016 – Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, has installed 50 percent of the solar home systems as part of an innovative project to electrify rural Morocco. UAE Foreign Minister Visits Masdar-Built Solar Plant in Mauritania
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited the Masdar-built Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania’s capital city, Nouakchott, while on a state visit to the country on 21 October 2015.
