UAE starts construction of projects under US$50 million Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund
Abu Dhabi, UAE, November 6, 2018: The first three renewable energy projects under the US$50 million United Arab Emirates-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) have broken ground in the Bahamas, Barbados and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC) announced today.

Zayed Sustainability Prize 2020 submissions up 13 per cent
Following its 11th annual awards ceremony, held in January, the Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE's pioneering global award in sustainability, entered a four-month submissions phase for the 2020 awards, which closed on 30th May with a record 2,373 completed submissions; a 13 per cent increase over the previous year.

Solar power – a primer
The energy that the Earth receives from the Sun in just one hour is equal to the total amount of energy consumed by humans in one year. Part of this energy can be converted into electricity by photovoltaic systems. The basic unit of these systems is the light-absorbing solar cell, also called a photovoltaic (PV) cell. Tech Park to fuel startups in Abu Dhabi

Lighting up Australian Antarctic station with solar
Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) have successfully installed the first solar panel system at an Australian Antarctic station, it was announced today. The solar installation will provide up to 30 kW of electric power to the Casey research station, located on Vincennes Bay in the Windmill Islands, just outside the Antarctic Circle, during the Austral summer months. The aim of the project, which is the first solar array providing power to an Australian Antarctic research station, is to reduce the reliance on diesel fuel, which is delivered yearly by the AAD’s Antarctic icebreaker, the Aurora Australis, from Hobart, Tasmania – a journey of 3,443km.

Global renewable capacity expansion soars 50
Global renewable energy capacity additions reached a record level last year, exceeding expansion in 2019 by almost 50 percent, according to date from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Worldwide, more than 260 gigawatts of renewable capacity was added last, accounting for more than 80 percent of all electricity expansion, the agency’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2021 report shows.
