Masdar City rolls out new Bike and Fitness Trail

Masdar and ADCB employees celebrated the launch of Mamsha Masdar, a dedicated bicycle and fitness trail, and two new ADCB Bikeshare stations at Masdar City, with a bicycle ride round the renewable energy company’s flagship sustainable urban development. The event was attended by H.H. Sheikh Theyab Bin Khalifa Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.

The new three-kilometre route will allow Abu Dhabi residents and visitors alike to experience Masdar City in a healthy, fun and sustainable way, cycling from the new bike share station at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters, via the recently unveiled Eco-Villa prototype, to a second new station at Masdar Park, an outdoor food and beverage destination.

Yousef Baselaib, Executive Director of Sustainable Real Estate at Masdar, said: “Among our many activities to mark the Year of Giving, we’re giving back to the community with the launch of our new bike and fitness trail. As a thriving sustainable community, Masdar City is the natural destination to promote low-carbon mobility and healthy and active lifestyles.”

A first-of-its-kind scheme in Abu Dhabi, ADCB Bikeshare is operated by Cyacle, a privately-owned venture supported by the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development. ADCB Bikeshare is expanding from 11 to 50 stations after a successful pilot phase. Masdar City residents and visitors are among the first to benefit from the scheme’s expansion, through the two new stations.

Baselaib continued: “We are delighted that ADCB and Cyacle have chosen Masdar City as a location for Abu Dhabi’s expanding bikeshare scheme. Using the bike and fitness trail, visitors can tour the sustainable landmarks around the city easily and safely.”

Masdar Park features five cafés and restaurants housed in repurposed shipping containers powered by solar panels; a display wall made from recycled musical instruments; and a pedal-powered cinema. Launched at The Festival at Masdar City during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the park will close in April then reopen after the summer.
