Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 concluded its largest edition with a renewed commitment to accelerate real-world solutions and drive sustainable progress.

Held under the theme ‘The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,’ over the course of five action-packed days the world’s largest sustainability gathering challenged leaders across energy, finance, food, water and nature to rethink how these global systems connect, scale and reinforce each other.

Most ambitious ADSW ever

Fifteen heads of state and government and over 400 ministers and government officials, more than double last year’s number, convened with business and civil society leaders in Abu Dhabi from January 11-15 to advance dialogue on sustainability issues. ADSW 2026, hosted by Masdar, a global clean energy leader, attracted over 60,000 attendees during the week, 20 percent more than last year’s edition. The week featured more than 240 dedicated sessions, with over 800 speakers, addressing key trends including global energy systems transformation; food, nature and water security; and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.

ADSW 2026 introduced new features designed to deepen engagement, including new platforms, and AI-enabled engagement tools to capture insights and connect delegates, and showcased breakthrough clean technologies reshaping global resilience.

The Opening Ceremony, held on January 13 at the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, along with: H.E. UAE leadership

Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, gave the opening address for ADSW 2026, highlighting the tectonic shift in the world’s economy, driven by AI; the UAE’s leadership in providing energy to power growth; and the country’s radical approach to partnership. Dr Al Jaber hailed a new era of human progress driven by computational power and digital capability, and underpinned by energy, and emphasized the role the UAE would play in that new era as the “corridor to the future.”

Inspiring the next generation

The event concluded with the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony, which recognized innovative solutions developed by changemakers across six categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action, and Global High Schools. A total of 11 awards were given out to pioneering organizations and high schools across the world, with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed personally presenting the winners with their awards.

Summits and Dialogues

The anchor event of ADSW 2026 was the ADSW Summit, which took place January 13-14, featuring over 100 speakers across more than 30 dedicated sessions, including keynote addresses, panel discussions and fireside chats, enabling energy, business, and technology leaders to identify impactful solutions and forge lasting partnerships. In the Leadership Segment, held on both days of the Summit, Heads of State and government addressed the most pressing challenges and opportunities in sustainable development.

The ADSW Dialogues program, held January 13-15, convened global leaders, policymakers, and industry experts, with partners including ADNOC, BlackRock, Global Climate Finance Centre, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Key Dialogues included the Next Leap, chaired by Dr Al Jaber, Larry Fink, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BlackRock, and Adebayo Ogunlesi, Chairman and CEO of GIP, which brought together global leaders to align on bankable, scalable infrastructure solutions accelerating partnerships and investment across the Global South.

Hosted by Masdar, the Next Watt dialogue convened CEOs from the largest renewable energy developers, including Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, with key suppliers and offtakers to identify practical pathways to meet soaring electricity demand with clean, reliable power.

The Green Hydrogen Summit, held on January 15, provided a platform for key stakeholders to collaborate on accelerating the global hydrogen economy. The summit featured 28 industry leaders, addressing issues including securing demand, unlocking investment, global shipping and the state of the green hydrogen landscape.

The World Future Energy Summit, the largest event at ADSW, took place from January 13-15 at the ADNEC Centre, featuring 515 exhibiting brands and 16 country and innovation-led pavilions. Over the three days, attendees had the opportunity to join conferences led by 300-plus industry experts, explore nine exhibition halls showcasing breakthrough products and solutions and discover cutting-edge technologies through the Greenhouse startup zone, FUSE AI and the Green Hydrogen Innovation Hub.

New platforms

This year, ADSW introduced new platforms to provide greater scope to address key issues. The inaugural Global South Utilities Forum, which took place January 14, convened policymakers, developers, financiers, and off-takers from the Global South and the UAE to discuss advancing investment, innovation, and the delivery of sustainable power and water infrastructure across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. A ministerial dialogue focused on how governments are translating policy vision into bankable infrastructure, while later sessions addressed deploying technology at speed and scale, renewables, energy storage and off-grid systems, and the growing role of industrial off-takers beyond traditional utilities.

ADSW also featured the Blue Forum, convened through the partnership between Masdar and the Sino-International Entrepreneurs Federation (SIEF), ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference in the UAE this December. Held on January 15, the event brought together leaders from government, multilateral organizations and development banks, business and civil society to unlock transformative opportunities for a water-secure future, driving technology, resilience, and sustainable growth.

Masdar: Celebrating 20 years of progress

Masdar, host of ADSW, celebrated 20 years of clean energy leadership by announcing its total renewable energy portfolio has reached 65 gigawatts (GW), up from 51GW at the start of 2025, two thirds of the way to its 2030 target of 100GW. Of the 65GW portfolio, 45GW is operational, under construction, or committed, with a further advanced pipeline of 20GW.

Masdar also made a series of announcements throughout the week, strengthening its presence in key markets including Uzbekistan, Oman and Sharjah, and expanding its footprint in Africa, with the signing of its first power purchase agreement in Angola.

Youth and Women empowerment

Held January 13-15, the Youth 4 Sustainability Forum and Youth Hub, brought together more than 3,500 young people from around the world, connecting them with 95 speakers from government, industry, and academia with initiatives such as Youth Connect and Talent Connect. The 2026 cohorts for the Y4S Future Sustainability Leaders and Sustainability Ambassadors programs were announced during the event while the last day also featured the final stages of the Out-of-Labs competition. The challenge brought together teams to showcase AI-enabled solutions addressing real-world challenges spanning technology and sustainability.

Held under the theme, “Inclusive Pathways for Transformative Growth,” the annual WiSER Forum took place on January 14, bringing together over 120 influential figures to advance dialogue on women’s leadership in sustainability and inclusive development. The forum focused on inclusive finance, policy and governance reform, scaling innovation, advancing skills for the future of work, redefining leadership norms, and strengthening inclusive foresight to build long-term resilience.

Partner events

ADSW 2026 kicked off with the 16th annual International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, which took place January 11-12, and was attended by over 1,500 delegates, including ministers, government officials, CEOs and partners from across the world. Decision-makers and leaders discussed key issues related to energy transformation, inclusive development, and long-term resilience in both developing and developed countries, amongst other topics.

The Global Climate Finance Centre Annual Meeting was held January 15, in collaboration with Masdar, connecting over 280 professionals with more than 20 speakers, and facilitating dialogue on advancing finance for climate action.

• Partnership aims to free up UK grid capacity and accelerate clean power to energy-intensive AI data centres, powered by Octopus’s smart tech

• Masdar is joining Octopus in unlocking massive renewable energy opportunities across Africa

Abu Dhabi Future Energy PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader, and Octopus Energy, the global energy tech disruptor, have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) for initiatives in the UK and Africa.

Masdar and Octopus will look to work together to free up hidden capacity across the UK’s distribution network to power the next generation of data centres. The companies signed the agreements during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the UAE.

The UK is facing an unprecedented crunch on grid connections, with renewable energy projects often waiting years to be plugged in. At the same time, electricity demand is soaring, with data centres requiring access to immense power sources, which can take years to secure.

Masdar and Octopus’ new model flips that challenge on its head by identifying pockets of available capacity in the UK’s distribution network and designing smart, local energy systems around them. By combining on-site solar, batteries and flexible grid connections, data centres will be able to unlock the power they need far sooner, without lengthy network delays.

Octopus’s Kraken-powered optimisation technology will dynamically balance on-site generation, batteries and grid power to guarantee uptime for energy-hungry AI workloads – while driving costs down by shifting consumption to cheaper periods.

Under the second MoU, Masdar and Octopus will partner to scale clean energy across Africa, harnessing the continent’s vast solar and wind resources for commercial and industrial (C&I) users.

The collaboration will deploy local grids and distributed energy systems that support jobs, productivity, and industrial growth, addressing one of the biggest roadblocks facing African businesses: underinvestment in grids, flexibility, and system integration.

Masdar will collaborate with Octopus on scaling projects, initially in South Africa with plans to extend to other countries soon.

Masdar is targeting working with Octopus on its Power Africa Initiative. Part of Global Citizens massive ‘Scaling Up Renewables in Africa Campaign’, the initiative aims to catalyse $450 million in investments across a range of clean-energy solutions, including grids, distributed assets and technologies that deliver clean power directly to the homes and businesses and boost African economies.

Masdar signed a framework agreement in 2023 to license Octopus’ Kraken technology platform to flexibly manage its battery storage portfolio in the UK.

• Saeta Yield, a Masdar company, closes the €340 million refinancing of clean energy assets in Portugal with range of lenders to repower and expand its wind portfolio in Portugal.

• Includes the potential to hybridize with 110MW of solar, marking Saeta Yield’s first repowering and hybridization initiative.

• Saeta Yield also signed €200 million revolving credit facility (RCF) to provide financial flexibility and finance projected growth.

Saeta Yield, a Masdar company, today announced it has successfully closed the €340 million refinancing of clean energy assets in Portugal, and has secured a €200 million RCF in Spain, as it looks to grow its project footprint and execute its expansion strategy.

The debt refinancing comprises €340 million of senior loan facilities, maturing at the end of 2041. The refinancing was heavily oversubscribed, reflecting strong support from the market, and confidence in Saeta Yield’s growth strategy and capabilities. Participating financial institutions include ING, which also acted as financial advisor, Bank of America, BBVA, Crédit Agricole CIB, DWS and Millennium investment banking.

Saeta Yield is expanding the Portugal project capacity from 124 megawatts (MW) of wind power to 144MW, with the potential addition of 110MW of solar capacity, which would make it the company’s first repowering and hybridization initiative. This upgraded pathway will serve as a blueprint for future asset modernizations, unlocking additional renewable energy generation and improved availability across the portfolio.

Additionally, Saeta Yield has also signed a €200 million RCF with a 3-year maturity, extendable to 5 years, to provide financial flexibility to support projected growth. Masdar, a global clean energy leader, is looking to expand in the Iberian Peninsula and across Europe as the company targets portfolio capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) worldwide by 2030. This March, Saeta closed an investment agreement for the construction and commissioning of a 234MW solar project in Valencia, with a potential battery energy storage system (BESS) hybridization of 259MW.

The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoyev, inaugurated the Nur Bukhara project, the country’s first utility-scale integrated solar and battery project, developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global clean energy leader.

The President also formally ‘broke ground’ on Masdar’s 300-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) and 75-megawatt hours (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) Guzar project, during a ceremony in Tashkent.

His Excellency Jamshid Khodjaev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, also witnessed the exchange of investment, transmission connection and battery storage system agreements for the Zarafshan BESS project, the nation’s largest standalone battery project, and a development roadmap for a 1,000MW wind power project in the Navoiy region, which will form the first phase of a 2,000MW program.

H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, affirmed that the United Arab Emirates is a key partner of the Republic of Uzbekistan in developing the energy sector in the country, particularly in the field of renewable energy and strategic projects that support sustainable development. He pointed out that cooperation between the two countries has led to delivering transformative projects that enhance energy security and establish a leading model for the transition toward clean and reliable energy sources.

Delivering at scale

The Nur Bukhara 250MW solar PV and 63MW/126MWh BESS project can produce enough electricity to power over 55,000 homes while avoiding 367,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The Guzar project, scheduled to begin operations in 2027, will be capable of powering 60,000 homes while avoiding over 400,000 tonnes of emissions.

The 300MW/600MWh Zarafshan BESS project is scheduled to begin operations in 2028 and will be capable of storing energy equivalent to powering approximately 1.3 million households for two hours. A second 300MW/600MWh phase is also planned for the facility.

Strategic market

These initiatives will add to Masdar’s growing footprint in Uzbekistan, which includes around 2 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy capacity, with investments exceeding US$2 billion.

With abundant wind and solar resources, Uzbekistan is targeting at least 25GW of renewable energy capacity, and generating 54 percent of power from renewables by 2030. President Mirziyoyev announced the latter goal at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week this year.

The CIS region is a strategic market for Masdar as it targets a global portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030. Beyond its footprint in Uzbekistan, the company has an active presence across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia in the region.

In Uzbekistan and across its global markets Masdar’s work is anchored in its ability to deliver firm, competitively priced clean power; integrating solar, wind and storage solutions that help relieve grid constraints and provides partners and customers with the reliable capacity they need as demand rises.

Masdar is also advancing large-scale energy storage innovation worldwide. In October, it broke ground on the world’s first gigascale 24/7 solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi, featuring a 5.2GW solar plant integrated with a 19GWh BESS to deliver 1GW baseload renewable power. Upon completion, this will be the largest and most technological advanced system of its kind globally.

In the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) and Emerge — a joint venture between Masdar and EDF power solutions — signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the second edition of Ras Al Khaimah Investment Summit (RAKIS), held in the emirate. The collaboration aims to advance renewable energy solutions within the RAKEZ ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of clean technologies and sustainable practices across the Ras Al Khaimah’s industrial and business sectors.

The agreement was signed by Yaser Abdullah Al Ahmed, Chief Government & Corporate Relations Officer at RAKEZ, and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge. It was witnessed by Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF power solutions Middle East, and Ali Alshimmari, Emerge Board Member.

Through this partnership, RAKEZ and Emerge aim to identify and implement sustainable energy projects across the economic zone, including solar generation, energy storage, and hybrid solutions, in line with the UAE’s clean energy agenda and Ras Al Khaimah’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040.

Masdar, a global clean energy leader and a pioneer in green hydrogen, and Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE's national railway network, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore transport solutions for the green hydrogen value chain across the nation.

Through this collaboration, the companies will assess opportunities to utilize Etihad Rail’s growing national network to enable transportation of feedstocks and products along the green hydrogen and derivatives value chain, including hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and others.

The signing ceremony was held during the Global Rail Transport and Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference, taking place this week in Abu Dhabi. His Excellency Shadi Malak, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Rail and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar witnessed the signing, with the signatories being Dr. Faye Al Hersh, Associate Director, Development UAE, Masdar and Adhraa Almansoori, Director Public Policy & Sustainability at Etihad Rail.

Masdar is aiming to be a leading producer of green hydrogen and its derivatives globally by 2030, with the company developing and investing in commercial projects and building scalable platforms in key markets around the world. Emerge, the energy solutions joint venture between Masdar and EDF power solutions, has signed a long-term solar energy agreement with Misk City to deliver sustainable electricity over the next 20 years – marking a milestone in the City’s journey to becoming a model of environmental innovation and green urbanism.

The signing ceremony was held in Riyadh at Misk City and attended by including David Henry, CEO of Misk City, Omar AlDaweesh, Emerge board member, Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge, and Samuel Ménard, Economic Counsellor and Anouar Mekkas, Nuclear and Renewable Energy Advisor at the French Embassy in Riyadh.

The agreement will see the development of a 621-kilowatt peak (kWp) rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plant atop a dedicated carport structure and other assets within Misk City, located in the northwest of Riyadh. Once operational, the system is expected to significantly reduce the city’s CO₂ footprint, contributing significantly to Misk City’s ambition of achieving a higher level of environmental performance through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and establishing itself as one of the region’s most advanced green urban communities.

Misk City is the world’s first nonprofit city of its kind—a pioneering urban model that reflects the Kingdom’s ambition to cultivate knowledge, creativity, and sustainable development in alignment with Vision 2030. Designed to integrate innovation, education, and sustainability, Misk City offers a dynamic, human-centered environment that attracts talent and fosters entrepreneurship and creativity. The move also brings Tadweer Group together with BEEAH, the region’s sustainability and innovation pioneer, as joint venture partners in the Emirates Waste-to-Energy company, which owns and operates the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant.

The acquisition by Tadweer Group of Masdar’s stake is a strategic decision to allow the two organizations to focus on their respective core business strategies. Masdar is continuing to ramp up its clean energy capacity, while Tadweer Group is focusing on its UAE operations and international expansion to support its ambitions to become an international leader in sustainably unlocking the value of waste. Tadweer Group and BEEAH will now synergize their waste management expertise for the sustainable operations of the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant, while paving the way for future projects through their Emirates Waste-to-Energy joint venture.

The Sharjah Waste-to-Energy project was inaugurated in 2022 under the Emirates Waste-to-Energy company as the first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant in the Middle East. It plays a vital role in diverting waste from landfills and converting it into electricity, supporting the UAE’s broader sustainability objectives. Through the Emirates Waste-to-Energy joint venture, BEEAH and Tadweer will jointly own and operate the plant, including going forward with plans to increase its power output from 30 MW to 60 MW, while doubling processing capacity for hard-to-recycle waste and displacing twice the volume of emissions.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy leader, TotalEnergies and EPointZero, the decarbonization arm of 2PointZero, a transformational global investment platform, have signed a Framework for Action (FFA) agreement to drive access to clean energy in emerging markets and developing economies in Africa and Asia.

The agreement was signed during the 3rd plenary meeting of the UAE-France High-Level Business Council held in Paris on February 16th, 2025 and follows the UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to France and meeting with French President His Excellency Emmanuel Macron, where they reaffirmed the strong strategic partnership between the two countries and discussed developing collaboration in key sectors such as climate action, energy, artificial intelligence and advanced technology.

Under the agreement, Masdar and TotalEnergies will strengthen their cooperation to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to local communities in Africa and support its long-term energy systems transformation, and to jointly develop some new clean energy opportunities in Southeast Asia. TotalEnergies and EPointZero will explore partnership opportunities to support India’s clean energy ambitions, including through solar, wind and energy storage, to contribute to the country’s decarbonization efforts.

The FFA signing was witnessed by H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, and H.E Mariam Almheiri, Group CEO of 2PointZero. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy leader – has announced that it has significantly increased its overall renewable energy capacity by 150 percent to 51GW by the end of 2024, up from 20GW in 2022. This achievement establishes Masdar as a global clean energy leader and well on track to achieving its ambitious target of 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Masdar’s operational, under construction and advanced pipeline capacity grew from 20GW to 51GW between 2022 and the end of 2024. It comes as Masdar’s portfolio of operational, under construction and committed capacity also rose in just 12 months from 16.5GW to 32.6GW by end of 2024.

In 2024 alone, Masdar deployed close to $8 billion in equity investments and secured more than $4.5 billion of project financing across nine countries, enabling the development of projects totaling over 6.5GW of new capacity. These accomplishments reflect Masdar’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio while driving the global energy transformation.

Masdar’s growth was advanced by landmark acquisitions in Greece, Spain and the United States, strengthening the company’s presence in Europe and North America, as well as breaking ground on seven major projects worldwide. These included two BESS projects in the UK, two solar projects in Azerbaijan with a combined capacity of 760MW, and the 1.5GW Al Ajban Solar Project in the UAE.

Masdar also announced the financial close of six projects, including the 1.1GW Al Henakiyah Solar Power Plant and multi-utility AMAALA sustainable project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as 760MW solar projects Bilasuvar and Neftchala in Azerbaijan.

Additionally, Masdar signed a Power Purchase Agreement in December 2024 for the 2GW Sadawi project in Saudi Arabia, and inaugurated the 500MW Zarafshan Wind Farm in Uzbekistan, now the largest operation in Central Asia.

The company successfully issued its second green bond, raising $1 billion, with a 4.6x oversubscription underscoring strong investor confidence in Masdar’s vision and performance. It came after Fitch upgraded Masdar’s credit rating to AA- from A+, demonstrating the confidence in the health of the company’s finances.
