Zayed Sustainability Prize 2020 submissions up 13 per cent
Following its 11th annual awards ceremony, held in January, the Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE's pioneering global award in sustainability, entered a four-month submissions phase for the 2020 awards, which closed on 30th May with a record 2,373 completed submissions; a 13 per cent increase over the previous year.

Solar power – a primer
The energy that the Earth receives from the Sun in just one hour is equal to the total amount of energy consumed by humans in one year. Part of this energy can be converted into electricity by photovoltaic systems. The basic unit of these systems is the light-absorbing solar cell, also called a photovoltaic (PV) cell. Conventional solar cells contain a rigid semiconductor wafer made of crystalline silicon as the PV material, although other PV materials are now in use as well.

Masdar Awards Contracts for Advanced Energy-Efficient Desalination Pilot Project
Abu Dhabi, UAE – 5 May, 2014: Masdar today awardedfour companies – Abengoa, Degrémont, Sidem/Veolia and Trevi Systems – withcontracts to each start the construction of a desalination plant as part ofMasdar’s pilot project in Abu Dhabi. First announced in January 2013, theproject aims to develop and demonstrate energy-efficient seawater desalinationtechnologies efficient enough to be powered by renewable energy. The newtechnologies are expected to allow the implementation of cost-competitivelarge-scale seawater desalination plants powered by renewable energy in the UAEand abroad.

Generation Z wants more action for a sustainable future
Climate change will be the world’s biggest challenge over the next decade, according to a global survey of young people carried out by Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. Unveiled at COP22, the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Morocco, the ‘Masdar Gen Z Global Sustainability Survey’ is the first global survey of the attitudes of young people aged 18-25 – the demographic cohort known as ‘Generation Z’ – towards climate change, sustainable development and renewable energy.

IFC appointed to oversee funding of Jordan’s largest solar power project
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, has selected International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, to oversee the funding of the largest solar power plant in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a 200-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic facility being developed by the wholly owned Masdar subsidiary Baynouna Solar Energy Company (BSEC).

Masdar Announces Fifth Annual ‘Engage’ Social Media Contest Winner
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, has announced the winner of its fifth annual Engage Social Media Contest. This year’s contest received 130 entries, a record level of participation in the five years of this competition, with submissions coming from 45 nations across six continents. For the first time, the contest welcomed submissions in formats other than blogging posts, which led to entries that included videos, slideshows and Tumblr updates.

Masdar unveils locally manufactured all-electric Eco-Bus at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2018
A template for future sustainable public transport solutions, the working prototype was jointly developed by Masdar and Abu Dhabi-based Hafilat Industry in collaboration with the Masdar Institute, part of Khalifa University of Science and Technology. Technology partner Siemens provided the bus’s engine giving the vehicle a range of 150 kilometres per charge while minimising the size and weight of its battery.

Three major solar projects inaugurated in the Caribbean
Three climate-resilient solar power projects in the Bahamas, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are being inaugurated this week under the US$50 million UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF), the largest renewable energy initiative of its kind in the region. The fund is a partnership between the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company).
