When we think of renewable energy infrastructure, we often have in mind dark blue photovoltaic rectangles carpeting the landscape, or large three-blade horizontal axis wind turbines marching along mountain ridges or into the sea. We think about grid reliability and consumer cost per kilowatt-hour, or we think about the climate change apocalypse that we will impose on future generations if we fail to act swiftly enough.

Green Run hosted at Masdar City
Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s sustainable urban community, will host hundreds of runners at its annual Green Run on Friday, February 22. Organised in collaboration with the Environment Friends Society, the Green Run is free to enter and has four categories: People of Determination (500 metres); Children (1km); Women (2km); and Men (3km).

Lighting up Australian Antarctic station with solar
Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) have successfully installed the first solar panel system at an Australian Antarctic station, it was announced today. The solar installation will provide up to 30 kW of electric power to the Casey research station, located on Vincennes Bay in the Windmill Islands, just outside the Antarctic Circle, during the Austral summer months. The aim of the project, which is the first solar array providing power to an Australian Antarctic research station, is to reduce the reliance on diesel fuel, which is delivered yearly by the AAD’s Antarctic icebreaker, the Aurora Australis, from Hobart, Tasmania – a journey of 3,443km.

UAE Foreign Minister Visits Masdar-Built Solar Plant in Mauritania
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited the Masdar-built Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania’s capital city, Nouakchott, while on a state visit to the country on 21 October 2015. He was accompanied by Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mining Mohammed Salem Ould Al Bashirand His Excellency Eisa Abdullah Al Kalbani, UAE Ambassador to Mauritania.

Mission Accomplished for UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund as Masdar Delivers 11 Clean Energy Projects
The recent inauguration of a 600kW solar photovoltaic plant in the Federated States of Micronesia marks the successful completion of Cycle 2 of US$50 million UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund. Through the UAE-PPF’s two cycles of financing provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, renewable energy projects have been delivered to 11 Pacific Island nations by Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company.

DEWA signs with Masdar to implement 800MW 3rd phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced today the selected bidder for the 800 megawatt (MW) third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which will be constructed based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. HE Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State, and Chairman of Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, was present. The selected bidder for the project is a Masdar-led consortium including the Spanish companies FRV (Fotowatio Renewable Ventures) and Gransolar Group. The consortium bid a Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE), of 2.99 US cents per kilowatt hour (kW/h).

UAE Looks to Strengthen Economic Ties With China in Bilateral Talks
Major Gen Omar al Bitar Opportunities to strengthen economic ties between the United Arab Emirates and China, were the focus of talks during a two-day visit to China by UAE minister of state H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. The visit is expected to lay the ground work for increased economic activity between the UAE and China which is growing at more than 14 per cent annually. Discussions explored opportunities for collaboration and investment across sectors of mutual interest, including energy, infrastructure and technology.
