Overview
Located in the Navoiy Region of Uzbekistan, the Zarafshan 300MW / 600MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project is one of the largest standalone battery energy storage projects in Central Asia. The project will support Uzbekistan’s energy transformation by enhancing grid stability, improving reliability of electricity supply, and facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the national power system.
Developed by Masdar through its wholly owned project company, Zarafshan Energy Storage FE LLC, the project comprises a 300MW / 600MWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery energy storage facility, an on-site substation, and an underground grid connection to the existing Muruntau Substation.
The project forms part of Uzbekistan’s wider program to strengthen energy security, modernize its power infrastructure, and increase the contribution of renewable energy to the national electricity mix. By storing electricity during periods of lower demand and discharging it during periods of peak demand, the facility will provide critical grid balancing and energy shifting services, helping to improve system resilience and support the country's growing renewable energy portfolio.
Based on a scenario in which the full battery capacity is charged from renewable sources and operated at maximum equivalent cycles, the project could facilitate the delivery of sufficient electricity to power approximately 44,000 households and avoid approximately 205,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. These figures represent the volume of renewable electricity stored and discharged through the BESS rather than electricity generated by the project itself.
