Overview
Masdar Energy Services developed a wind farm on the Samoan island of Upolu, which is home to nearly 75 percent of the population. The innovative project supplies 1,500 megawatt-hours of power per year, delivering US$475,000 in annual fuel savings. It reduces the island’s carbon-dioxide footprint by more than 1,000 tonnes each year.
The pioneering project includes two 55-metre wind turbines that can pivot at the base and be lowered and locked in place in less than one hour. This collapsible design helps to avoid damage from the region’s numerous cyclones.
