Overview

Masdar signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) at COP28 to develop a 1 gigawatt (GW) wind projects with potential battery energy storage systems (BESS). With this JDA in place, Masdar will start a wide measurement campaign through the country to identify sites with competitive capacity factors. Selected locations will be developed enabling further foreign investments into the country and create more jobs within the RE sector. This Agreements targets to not only enable more RE integration but also aims to strategically position Jordan to become an energy hub for clean energy.

In addition, Masdar and MEMR signed a memorandum to explore the feasibility of establishing a green hydrogen plant. The study will examine the feasibility of establishing a green hydrogen project near The Port of Aqaba to produce the most cost-competitive hydrogen, utilizing desalinated seawater, and dedicated renewable power.

With substantial wind and solar resources that can be used to generate large amounts of renewable energy, and produce cost-competitive green hydrogen and green fuels, Jordan has the potential to become a global powerhouse in the green energy transition. This project will advance Jordan's clean energy goals and support the Economic Modernization Vision (2023-2033).
