The development of Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP) project will make an important contribution to the United Arab Emirates’ Energy Strategy 2050.
“As well as being the largest single-site solar PV project in the world, it will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.4 million metric tonnes per year,” said Shailesh Monteiro, Director of Business Development, Generation at Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA).

Alongside its contribution to climate action, the project is highlighting the continued economic viability of solar power and diversifying the UAE’s energy mix, as well as aiding with economic diversification and attracting foreign investment.

The project, located approximately 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city, will have a capacity of two gigawatts and supply power to the plant’s off-taker, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). It will use approximately 4 million solar panels to generate enough electricity for approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE.

TAQA and Masdar are leading a consortium that includes EDF and JinkoPower to develop the Al Dhafra Solar PV project.

“Al Dhafra is a great example of how collaboration between UAE companies can advance the country’s energy goals. Masdar is extremely proud to be involved in this landmark project in Abu Dhabi and we believe it showcases the Emirate and the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development and climate change mitigation,” said Osama Al Othman, Head of Development & Investment for the GCC, India & Americas in Masdar’s Clean Energy division.
