Record-breaking Abu Dhabi project to help advance UAE’s clean energy goals, says TAQA executive

The development of Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP) project will make an important contribution to the United Arab Emirates’ Energy Strategy 2050. 
“As well as being the largest single-site solar PV project in the world, it will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.4 million metric tonnes per year,” said Shailesh Monteiro, Director of Business Development, Generation at Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). 

Alongside its contribution to climate action, the project is highlighting the continued economic viability of solar power and diversifying the UAE’s energy mix, as well as aiding with economic diversification and attracting foreign investment. 

The project, located approximately 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city, will have a capacity of two gigawatts and supply power to the plant’s off-taker, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). It will use approximately 4 million solar panels to generate enough electricity for approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE.

TAQA and Masdar are leading a consortium that includes EDF and JinkoPower to develop the Al Dhafra Solar PV project.
