Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said: “Masdar is committed to supporting all efforts aimed at strengthening the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) position in the energy sector, particularly in relation to renewable energy. World leaders and clean energy experts will gather at the World Energy Forum to discuss policies and solutions that address the challenges of energy security. Hosting this forum in the United Arab Emirates demonstrates the great confidence the world places in the UAE’s ability to play a leading role in the renewable energy sector."

World Energy Forum 2012 aims to promote multilateral dialogue and to develop an integrated road map to support global energy security. It positions the UAE as a global centre of excellence for energy studies and research which has been increasingly recognized globally.  Earlier this year, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon chose to launch the “Sustainable Energy for All” initiative from Abu Dhabi during World Future Energy Summit 2012.

Dr Al Jaber added, "Masdar believes that open global platforms encouraging collaboration and action are crucial to finding solutions to global challenges. In this effort, Masdar will host the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week next January to address the energy, water and sustainability challenges the world currently faces”.

From January 13-17, 2013, Masdar will host the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) which was announced by the UAE during the Rio +20 summit in Brazil in June 2012, as an extension of the active role played by the UAE in international efforts to achieve sustainable development.

ADSW will host several conferences and events. In addition to the annual World Future Energy Summit and the award ceremony for the Zayed Future Energy Prize, ADSW will also include: The International Water Summit, launched by His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces last year, to address challenges of water scarcity; third Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); and International Renewable Energy Conference, to hosted by Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21).

The conferences included in ADSW will place the UAE and Abu Dhabi at the centre of the global dialogue on renewable energy and sustainable development as the event is expected to witness a turnout of internationally recognized leaders from governments, the private sector, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
