Masdar participates in panel on gender equality in energy
Masdar’s Executive Director for Brand and Strategic Initiatives, Dr Lamya N Fawwaz, participated in a panel discussion titled “Equality in the Energy Sector,” at the Global Women’s Forum Dubai (GWFD) hosted by the Dubai Women Establishment.
Joining Fawwaz on the panel was Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications at Dubai Electricity and Water Company (DEWA) and Valerie Levkov, Senior Vice President, Africa, Middle East and Mediterranean, EDF.
Moderated by Campbell M. Steedman, Partner, Squire Patton Boggs, the panel discussion highlighted the importance of gender equality within the sustainable energy sector, how Masdar has contributed to women’s empowerment in the region and globally, and how this has been supported by government policies.
"The representation of women in the energy fields is very promising, as the sector provides women with several opportunities to learn, grow and reach leadership positions. At Masdar, we support and empower women through several leadership programmes aimed at closing gaps in the energy sector," Fawwaz said during the panel.
Masdar is helping to advance Goal 5 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on gender equality. The company is addressing women’s empowerment and engagement in clean energy and sustainable development through its Clean Energy division, and its strategic initiatives including the Zayed Sustainability Prize, Youth 4 Sustainability, and the WiSER platform, among others.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, GWFD offers a global platform to influence policies and foster partnerships that further women’s positive impact. The theme of the event was ‘The Power of Influence’, and forum discussions were aimed at inspiring dialogue on the role of women across four main areas: government, economy, society, and future.
