Masdar participates in live MEED webinar
Yousif Al Ali, the Acting Executive Director of Clean Energy, Masdar, joined a specialist panel for a live MEED Webinar broadcast that discussed the growing opportunities in the Middle East for waste-to-energy projects.
Joining Al Ali on the panel was Jean Claude Nasr, Senior Vice-President, Power Generation, Gas & Power, Siemens; and Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah, Masdar’s joint-venture partner for the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Facility.
Located at Bee’ah’s Waste Management Center in Sharjah, the plant is expected to come on stream by 2021 and will process more than 37.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste per hour to generate electricity sustainably. Once operational, it will contribute significantly to reaching the UAE’s target of diverting 75 per cent of its solid waste from landfills by 2021, as well as Sharjah’s zero-waste-to-landfill goal.
During the MEED webinar, held on July 16, the panel discussed the importance of government regulation and legislation to ensure the success of the waste-to-energy sector.
“It is a very important factor for our region because this is a new industry and we cannot really compete against gas or other conventional power plants selling cheap power. Government regulation and legislation is required because this is a new sector in the region,” Al Ali said.
