As we prepare for the Masdar-hosted Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, we look back on a year of impressive growth for Masdar and both its Clean Energy and Sustainable Real Estate portfolios. In 2019, Masdar secured its first major renewable energy project in Saudi Arabia, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, Saudi Arabia’s first and the Middle East’s largest wind project. In the process, we set a new record for the most competitively priced wind power.

Other highlights of 2019 include:

  • Bidding successfully for Noor Midelt I in Morocco, one of the most advanced examples of hybridised solar PV and concentrated solar power technologies in the world;
  • Securing large-scale opportunities in solar energy in the emerging markets of Armenia and Uzbekistan;
  • The delivery of Serbia’s largest wind farm;
  • Becoming the first commercial investor in the UK government’s £400 million Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund, which aims to more than double the country’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

In 2020, Masdar will complete delivery of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park in Dubai, the Dhofar Wind Farm in Oman, and the Baynouna Solar Park in Jordan.

The last 12 months also witnessed the continued expansion of Masdar City, our home in Abu Dhabi. These include:

  • The opening of the first private apartments at the Leonardo Residences;
  • The launch of My City Centre Shopping Mall;
  • The unveiling of the Honeywell Masdar Innovation Center;
  • The delivery of more sustainable transport options, including the first car-sharing service in the Middle East to use Tesla vehicles.

Some notable examples of our humanitarian work have included the launch of several renewable energy projects in the Bahamas, Barbados and St Vincent & the Grenadines under the Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund, the “20 by 2020” campaign launched by the Zayed Sustainability Prize, and the successful youth outreach of WiSER and the Future Sustainability Leaders.

Masdar is looking forward to celebrating all our achievements at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) from January 11-18, which will mark the beginning of an auspicious year for the UAE as it prepares for its Golden Jubilee in 2021 and looks forward to the next 50 years of its development.
