Hywind is the world’s first floating offshore windfarm. Located off the coast of Aberdeenshire in Scotland, the 30 megawatt (MW) farm is a GBP210 million project.
Masdar has 25% stake in the project, along with lead operators Statoil, who own 75%.
The facility consists of five 6MW wind turbines that are anchored in to the seafloor, existing in water depths of up to 120 metres. When complete in late 2017, the project will provide 6,600 homes with electricity, displacing 63,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Hywind is the second offshore wind partnership between Masdar and Statoil after the Dudgeon wind farm, a 402MW project also due to come on-stream by the second half of 2017.
