It serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy.
IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.
In 2011, Masdar City in Abu Dhabi was announced as the permanent location of the IRENA headquarters, making the agency the first intergovernmental organisation to be based in the Middle East.
The IRENA Building at Masdar City is one of the most advanced and sustainable multi-use buildings in the United Arab Emirates. It is the first in the UAE to receive a 4 Pearl rating from Estidama, the certification system introduced by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council to govern the environmental performance of new buildings.
