Hywind is the world’s first floating offshore windfarm. Located off the coast of Aberdeenshire in Scotland, the 30 megawatt (MW) farm is a GBP210 million project.
Masdar has 25 per cent stake in the project, along with lead operator Equinor, who own 75 per cent.
The facility consists of five 6MW wind turbines that are anchored in to the seafloor, existing in water depths of up to 120 metres. Operational since 2017, the project provides 22,000 homes with electricity, displacing 63,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Hywind is the second offshore wind partnership between Masdar and Equinor after the Dudgeon wind farm, a 402MW project which came on stream by the second half of 2017.
