Overview
In June 2020, Masdar signed an agreement with the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan to design, finance, build and operate a 500-megawatt (MW) utility-scale wind farm project. On completion in 2025, the Zarafshan wind farm, which is located in the Navoi region, will have a capacity of 500MW, provide enough electricity to power 150,000 homes, and will displace over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Developed, built and to be operated by Masdar, the wind farm is the largest of its kind in Central Asia and the first to be constructed in Uzbekistan.
The project is Masdar’s second utility-scale project in Uzbekistan, following the signing of agreements with the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan to design, finance, build and operate the country’s first public-private partnership (PPP) solar power plant in Navoi. The Republic of Uzbekistan has set a goal to increase the share of renewables to more than 50 percent of total generation by 2030, developing over 24GW wind and solar capacity.
