The Al Dhafra Solar project, set to be the world’s largest single-site solar power plant, has been named the Utility-Scale Solar Project of the Year by the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA).

The record-breaking project, located around 35 kilometers outside Abu Dhabi, will have a capacity of 2 gigawatts, using about 3.5 million solar panels to generate enough electricity for approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE. Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Masdar, and EDF and JinkoPower are developing the project, and financial close on it was announced last year.

The plant will deploy the latest in crystalline, bifacial solar technology, which will deliver electricity to the highest efficiency enabling the plant to provide more power by using both the front and back of panels.

MESIA, headquartered in Dubai, is the largest solar trade association in the Middle East and North Africa region. Established in 2009, the association represents over 150 international and local organizations including investors, installers, manufacturers, law firms, consultants, policymakers and banks.
