Masdar Specialist Tours For ADSW Delegates


Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2017 includes a range of technical tours and site visits that will enhance the visitor experience. Details of the programmes and how to book are below.

The Masdar Solar Hub Tour

The Masdar Solar Hub is a state-of the art solar testing and R&D hub for photovoltaic and solar thermal technology located in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi and is jointly managed by Masdar and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. The Masdar Solar Hub aims to become in the near future a globally recognized centre of excellence in the areas of photovoltaic and solar thermal energy technologies.

The tour will include a short technical presentation on the Solar Hub followed by a site visit to the Masdar Test Field Station, the Masdar Institute Solar Platform, and the 10MW Solar Farm.

  • Attendees: This tour would interest and be most suitable for engineers, renewable energy and solar energy experts, professors and senior students.
  • Duration: 3 hours 
  • Transportation: Transportation from ADNEC will be provided (bus will leave at 9.00am). Participants have the option to take their own transportation (taxi or vehicle)

Renewable Energy Desalination Tour

Masdar launched the Renewable Energy Desalination Programme in January 2013 following a mandate from Abu Dhabi’s leadership. The forward-thinking mandate directed Masdar to develop and demonstrate advanced and innovative technologies in desalination to both ensure water security and reduce energy consumption in the sector in order to meet the UAE energy reduction targets.

The goal of this programme is to identify industrial-scale and commercially viable desalination technologies that will address sustainable access to water both in the arid region and globally.

Specifying sustainability and energy efficiency as the primary focus represents a novel approach to an industry-wide challenge and is designed to create the right synergies between the academic and research worlds, industry and public institutions.

The Masdar City Technical Tour

Al Reyadah - CCUS Project

Al Reyadah (a Masdar / ADNOC Joint Venture) is the Middle East’s first specialised company focused on exploring and developing commercial-scale projects for carbon capture, usage and storage. Known as CCUS, this technological process will significantly reduce the carbon footprint in the United Arab Emirates and contributes to global efforts to combat climate change. Focusing on clean hydrocarbon power and industrial energy efficiency also adds value through carbon monetisation.

Al Reyadah’s first project, located in Mussafah Abu Dhabi, shall capture up to 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per annum from the adjacent Emirates Steel facility, to be transported to an ADNOC oil field for enhanced oil recovery usage and storage. The long-term goals of Al Reyadah’s CCUS ambitions include building a national network for the capture of CO2 from power generation and industry, and then usage of the CO2 for enhanced oil recovery instead of reinjecting natural gas into oil fields to trigger oil flow.

The benefits of re-injecting CO2 rather than natural gas include: 1) securing the long-term storage of the heat-trapping gas that contributes to climate change; and 2) preserving cleaner-burning natural gas so it can be used for power generation or as a transportation fuel.

The tour shall provide a brief insight into Al Reyadah’s Mussafah Carbon Capture Facility, its design and current status, followed by a walking tour of the facility.

  • Safety Instructions Tour participants must not leave the group to explore other areas. During Site tour, participant must not touch equipment, push buttons, or go beyond any type of barriers. All tour participants must remain with the group. Please wear proper cloths & shoes (no heels, sandals or other open toed shoes).

Shams1 Tour

The Experience will include a short brief on how one of the world’s largest concentrated solar power works and how it effectively generates power to 20,000 homes in the UAE as whole.

Highlight on a dry-cooling system that significantly reduces water consumption – a critical advantage in the arid desert of western Abu Dhabi. More benefits will also be elaborated as the plant displaces approximately 175,000 tons of CO2 per year.

  • Attendees: This tour would interest and be most suitable for engineers, renewable energy and solar energy experts and professors.
  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Transportation: Transportation will be included for this programme from ADNEC to Shams1 project and return.
